Data Management Tips for D365 F&O
July 22, 2024
The Data Management Workspace in D365 F&O is an amazing tool to import and export data from the system. There are hidden tools and tricks to get it to make your job easier. Check out three tips that have helped me in my work in the system.
Truncate Data Entity
Sometimes the data in a data entity isn't quite right. Maybe its during Go-Live and the wrong data was loaded or maybe it's a supplemental entity for additional information and the data just needs to be updated completely.
D365 F&O Data management provides a way to truncate, or empty, the data entity before importing the new data you have uploaded.
When you import data using the Data Management framework, set “Truncate entity data” toggle to yes, and system will remove all existing data in the target entity before importing the new data from your file.
The form will automatically display a yellow ribbon letting you know that the existing data will be deleted upon import of new data.
Number of Parallel Tasks
Running parallel tasks for data management imports in D365 F&O can significantly improve the efficiency of your data import processes. Here are the key steps to set up and manage parallel tasks:
Navigate to Workspaces > Data Management > Framework Parameters tile > Entity Settings tab.
Click on Configure Entity Execution Parameters.
Define the number of threads to be used when importing an entity in batch. This involves setting up the entity, import threshold record count, and import task count.
Import threshold record count
The minimum number of records that are required before the task will be split into separate threads (parallel tasks)
Import task count
The number of tasks(threads) that should run concurrently to import the data
Keep in mind your environment has a limited number of batch threads
Mapping Default Values
Once you have imported your file into data management, you always have to review and setup the map to tell D365 F&O where to put the data from your file. If all records have the same value, you can select "Auto default" on the mapping line and then select "Default value" to define what that value should be.
This is extremely helpful when you have recurring data jobs for import.
A few extra clicks here and there when using the Data Managment workspace can add a ton of value (and time saving) to importing data into your D365 F&O environments.
